Experimentation in Two-Sided Markets

چکیده
We study optimal experimentation by a monopolistic platform in a two-sided market. The platform provider faces uncertainty about the strength of the externality each side is exerting on the other. It maximizes the expected present value of its pro t stream in a continuous-time in nite-horizon framework by setting participation fees or quantities on both sides. We show that a price-setting platform provider sets a fee lower than the myopically optimal level on at least one side of the market, and on both sides if the two sides are approximately symmetric. If the externality that one side exerts is su ciently well known and weaker than the externality it experiences, the optimal fee on this side exceeds the myopically optimal level. We obtain analogous results for expected prices when the platform provider chooses quantities. While the optimal policy does not admit closed-form representations in general, we identify special cases in which the undiscounted limit of the model can be solved in closed form.

One-sided Logic in Two-sided Markets
In this paper, I consider eight basic fallacies that can arise from using conventional wisdom from one-sided markets in two-sided market settings. These fallacies are illustrated using statements made in the context of regulatory investigations into credit card schemes in Australia and the United Kingdom. I discuss how these fallacies may be reconciled by proper use of a two-sided market analys...
متن کاملOptimal Bidding Strategies of GENCOs in Day-Ahead Energy and Spinning Reserve Markets Based on Hybrid GA-Heuristic Optimization Algorithm
In an electricity market, every generation company (GENCO) attempts to maximize profit according to other participants bidding behaviors and power systems operating conditions. The goal of this study is to examine the optimal bidding strategy problem for GENCOs in energy and spinning reserve markets based on a hybrid GA-heuristic optimization algorithm. The heuristic optimization algorithm used...
متن کاملUncoordinated Two-Sided Markets∗
Various economic interactions can be modeled as two-sided markets. A central solution concept to these markets are stable matchings, introduced by Gale and Shapley. It is well known that stable matchings can be computed in polynomial time, but many real-life markets lack a central authority to match agents. In those markets, matchings are formed by actions of self-interested agents. Knuth intro...
متن کاملTwo-sided Markets and the Challenge of Turning Economic Theory into Competition Policy
The theory of two-sided markets is one of the most widely discussed topics in modern industrial organization scholarship. Hundreds of academic papers have been written about it in the last ten years. The concept has also veered into antitrust policy, with applications in major jurisdictions such as the United States (“US”), China, and the European Union (“EU”). At this juncture, it seems approp...
متن کاملDefining Two-Sided Markets
We propose a general definition of “two-sided markets,” identify the conditions under which a market is indeed two-sided, and, finally, discuss why two-sidedness matters for business and public policies.
